Boo but no hoo

BEST SIGN EVER

Well that's all folks.

In 1979 she struck me as a middle class Tory harridan, twinset and pearls with jam and Jerusalem values, not my cup of Earl Grey at all, but during the Falklands War even I thought she had a point; fascist aggression had to be faced and defeated. Except of course, Tory cuts and perhaps South American machismo had aided it along; and to her the fascist enemy of her fascist enemy was her friend...

Her behaviour during - and after - the miner's strike was unforgivable; I don't need to explain that to my regular readers of course, but a few less publicised facts:

To break the miners she bought coal from Peru, who used child labour, Poland, her ideological enemy and there were instances on the picket lines of miners recognising serving soldiers dressed in police riot gear.

I could go on of course, but there is a party to go to.

  1. She wanted that war with Argentina.

She needed it. She was incredibly unpopular and she had much damage to do before she was finished.

The FCO knew what Argintina was doing. They had known in the days of Callaghan. Tony Benn wrote about it in his diaries.

Instead of making it plain to Argentina that they wouldn't tolerate any interference in the Malvinas, Thatcher's government ignored it, sending out a diplomatic message that no one in London would be much bothered by a invasion.

Then when there was an invasion and Amerioca wanted to have a negociated settlement, she was having none of it. She wanted war, because she knew that she could play Winston, get the British Bulldog Spirit going, become a war hero, and sweep the boards at the next election.

    And she did.

She killed and maimed a lot of people on her way.

I won't celebrate her death, but I don't mourn it, and to be honest I've never agreed that you shouldn't talk ill of the dead. And as I called her an evil killer when she was alive, I see no reason not to call her one now.

Enjoy your party. I expect there will be many in pubs up and down Scotland tonight.

  2. 8 weeks before Argentina invaded there were ships tied up at the K.G.V.docks at Govan whose owners were "advised" not to sail to South America.
